Capcom has no current plans for “Darkstalkers Are Not Dead”

July 22, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Sequel not completely written off, but not in near future.

Capcom is hurting as a company right now, with a recent restructuring leading to the shrinking of it US division, including fan favorite boss Christian Svensson, and now we see the fallout extend to the games.

SIliconera was the first to follow up on this story, following Capcom at Comic Con the past few years. Producer Yoshinori Ono has been encouraging fans to raise their hands for the classic franchise and telling people that "Darkstalkers are not dead". That this not happen this year, and so they put Capcom's Matt Dahlgren to the question.

Matt confirms the company has nothing related to Darkstalkers planned in the immediate horizon, but did not completely write it off.

The company did release Darkstalkers Resurrection to send out feelers for interest in a new installment in the franchise. Unfortunately, three months ago Christian Svensson came onto the Capcom Unity forums to confirm that the compilation did not sell as well as they hoped it to be, even though it was the top seller in the PSN charts. Most recently, as we know, Capcom went through that restructuring.

Sadly, Ono himself may have secretly confirmed Darkstalkers' quiet shuttling off earlier last week. In his earlier tweets he explained he had limits on budget and R&D, so it would not be possible to make a Street Fighter V alongside Ultra Street Fighter IV. Of course, a new Darkstalkers game, even one using the Street Fighter or Marvel vs Capcom 3 engines, would also not be possible.

Capcom, like Nintendo, has every opportunity to rebound with their fighting games, esp with Ultra Street Fighter IV being resold to a captive audience. However, do not expect the tide of bad news to end anytime soon.
