Nintendo Switch Online Won’t Keep Cloud Storage Saves After Missed Payment

September 17, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

Make sure you keep your saves locally.

One of the features that gamers have been asking for is a means to transfers saves from their Nintendo Switch console. When the hybrid gaming device released there have been reports of gamers who had to purchase a new unit only to find that there was no means to getting their saves for already played video games. With the Nintendo Switch Online service being rolled out, Nintendo had decided to bring out a means to store saves on their cloud.

This is a feature that we’re sure will put some minds at ease for Nintendo Switch owners, but that doesn’t mean this feature doesn’t come with a catch. Spotted and noted by GameSpot, it appears that Nintendo will not be keeping your saves on the cloud storage once your subscription ends. Ultimately, what this means is that if you fail to make a payment for your subscription service, your online cloud storage saves will be deleted.

“Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.”

We’re unsure if this automatically done the day your miss a subscription service payment or if there is a lenient period in which gamers can make a payment within a certain amount of time before the saves are removed from the online storage system. Regardless, you can still save your data locally on the Nintendo Switch console.

For now, we recommend backing up your saves locally in case you ever miss a payment and lose all of your hard earned work.
