Charting New Territory in Uncharted 3: 10 Most Wanted Features

March 27, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3 is bound to break new ground. We take a look at ten features that we’d love to see make it into the game.

With the release of Uncharted 3 not being too far off, we’ve an opportunity to ponder and speculate on the features that will define Nathan Drake’s next adventure. Here are the top ten features we want out of the next game.

#10 More Interactive Vehicle Sections

While the vehicle sections in the first two Uncharted games were largely enjoyable, they could be improved with the addition of more interaction. Being able to drive a car while firing your gun would be a lot more fun than playing a shooter on rails.

#9 Cooperative Multiplayer Campaign

Fending off waves of enemies with your partner if fun, but being able to play through the entire campaign would ramp up the cooperative experience to the next level.

#8 Active Reload System

Uncharted 3 could borrow Gears of War’s greatest feature as a cover-based shooter: the active reload system. Being able to reload your gun while running and gunning would make the combat much more fluid and fast paced.

#7 Parkour Moves

There’s no doubt that Nathan Drake is quick on his feet and good with his hands. With his skill and finesse, he ought to be able to trip enemies while on the run and perform moves that would make Ezio Auditore da Firenze jealous.

#6 Improved Combat

When faced with multiple opponents, Nathan Drake’s only option is to take one of them at a time. He may not be a skilled assassin, but he should be able to defend himself a little better.

#5 Increased Freedom of Movement

While Nathan Drake is very agile, there are times when his movements seem uncharacteristically clumsy. Improving Drake’s ability to scale walls and climb backwards would go a long way towards improving the game’s exploration sections.

#4 More Interesting Enemies

Nathan Drake spends most of his time battling mercenaries, most of whom are equipped with guns and behave in the same manner. Arming them with machetes and other weapons would add some much needed variety to the combat.

#3 A Return of Elena Fisher

It’s safe to say that Elena is Yin to Nathan Drake’s Yang without spoiling too much about the first two games. Uncharted 3 just wouldn’t be the same without the presence of the brave journalist we’ve come to know and love.

#2 Greater Background Detail

One of the biggest draws to the Uncharted setting was its detailed history, made accessible through the journal of Francis Drake and characters like Karl Schäfer. Pack Nathan’s journal with more optional content for us to peruse in-between bouts of combat.

#1 Better Enemy AI

The enemies in the first two games tend to behave mindlessly, often running straight into gunfire and doing little to nothing to cooperate with each other on the battlefield. In Uncharted 3, they ought to stick together and perform as squads instead of running around like headless chickens.
