NPD sales report for June

July 19, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Highlights include The Last Of Us, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, industry still down 15 %.

NPD Group has released figures for the month of June. Overall, the industry is down by 15 % compared to the same period last year, but there are a few highlights, notably The Last Of Us and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. At this point I'd like to add a reminder that NPD has decided to stop giving out actual software sales numbers to the public. They have also partnered up with marketing research firm EEDAR to ensure accuracy, and will track digital download sales in the future, but that wasn't ready for this month,, so these are only sales for physical games at retail.

Software Top 10

1. The Last Of Us (PS3) Sony (Corp)
2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) Nintendo
3. Minecraft (360) Microsoft (Corp)
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (360, PS3, PC, NWU)** Activision Blizzard (Corp)
5. NBA 2K13 (360, PS3, WII, NWU, PSP, PC)** Take 2 Interactive (Corp)
6. Injustice: Gods Among Us (360, PS3, NWU)** Warner Bros. Interactive
7. Donkey Kong Country Returns (3DS, WII) Nintendo
8. Deadpool (360, PS3) Activision Blizzard (Corp)
9. Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)** Electronic Arts
10. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) Nintendo

Nintendo reports their own sales figures combining NPD numbers with their own digital sales numbers. These are their figures for the 3DS' top selling June games:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 505K
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon – 115K ( 750K total sales)
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D – 108K

The Last of Us sold exceptionally well, only losing out to God of War 3 in terms of highest PS3 sales in the first month. In terms of hardware, 3DS is the best selling console with 225,000 units, 45 % higher than the same time last year. NPD tracked down sales for both vanilla, CE and other special editions, but not for copies of the game bundled with the PS3.

NPD has also started tracking sales for the Ouya, although they offered no numbers at this time. They say the system currently has a low uptake.

June has seen some life come back to the PS3 late in its cycle thanks to Naughty Dog's latest hit, and 3DS hardware and software sales have helped lift what would otherwise be decreasing numbers for the industry. We still have a few months to go before the coming of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
