Rumor: DICE May Increase Battlefield 4 Players to 70 or More

July 15, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Developer experimented with 256 players for Battlefield 3

BF4Central has reported on a rumour that DICE are consider increasing Battlefield 4's 64 player-count to 70 and possibly more.

According to the site's source DICE are experimenting with 70 or more players for multiplayer matches but it's unclear what the results of DICE's tests are.

The thinking behind the increase is two-fold; firstly, the game's squad system has five players on each squad. This means there's uneven squads with the current 32 players per-team setup. This means that while six squard would have five players the last squad would have only two.

If DICE increased the number of players to 35 per side it would mean there would be seven squads all with five players.

The second reason DICE are said to be considering increasing the player count is that in the making of Battlefield 3 the developer experimented with 128 and even 256 players – as was the case with PS3 online shooter MAG. Some players were able to hack Battlefield 3 to support 128 players and given DICE's previous experiments there shouldn't too much of a technical hurdle to overcome for 70 players in Battlefield 4.

Having 70 players would help Battlefield 4 stand out from its PC rivals – most of which offer support for 64 players on the platform. Battlefield 4 is being developed for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC and will be released later this year.
