Battlefield 4 will support Xbox One Kinect

July 10, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

DICE developer promises it will be used in a way that will "make sense".

In the latest issue of Game Informer, DICE confirms they have added Xbox One Kinect support for Battlefield 4. However, they emphasize that motion controls don't make sense for the game, and they will be using Kinect in a way that makes sense.

DICE General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson elaborates that they are looking at Xbox One Kinect pragmatically. Instead of ticking off items on a checklist, they have thought about what features make sense for the game and using those that add value to players.

Troedsson also points out that first person shooters require a high level of skill and accurate controls, and at this point in time motion controls aren't ready to deliver on those points yet. Troedsson did not reveal any more details on how they will be utilizing Kinect.

Xbox One Kinect is a technically impressive iteration over the original. Running off the Xbox One's next gen specs, it will come equipped with a 1080p camera, and will process 2 Gigabits of data. We have seen demonstrations showing Kinect counting the number of people in a room, turning on the Xbox One by voice, identifying registered Xbox One owners for automatic login, facial recognition, switching players around based on position, and generally improved motion sensing technology.

We earlier reported that Battlefield 4 may have mouse and keyboard support for the Playstation 4, although it hasn't been officially confirmed, and we are also yet to confirm if that console will even be gettiing mouse and keyboard peripherals. Similarly, DICE did not elaborate if or how they would be using Kinect on the Xbox 360.
