Saints Row 4 Developer Volition Isn’t Worried By Next-Gen Competition

July 9, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Producer thinks the game stands out enough to distinguish it from the competition.

Jim Boone, the producer of Saints Row 4 at Volition, has told GamesIndustry the studio isn't concerned about the prospects of their game – which releases next month – being overshadowed by PS4 and Xbox One content.

Boone says he studied the late 2011 lineup when Saints Row The Third was being released "wondering how [Saints Row] was going to do. There were a lot of big heavy hitters going out at the same time, so I wondered. And it went out and was the biggest game we've done yet."

The Third faced competition from games such as Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Boone adds he was more worried about The Third's performance than he is about how Saints Row 4 will perform.

"I think the big thing that we have going for us is that our game is so unique and different from everything else that's out there, and because we have an audience that absolutely love this game, that helps us cut through some of the other noise that's out there."

Boone also reveals that Volition experimented with mobile after being acquired by Deep Silver earlier this year but as they had nothing new to add to the mobile space they would continue to focus instead on console.

Boone has previously commented that he isn't concerned by Grand Theft Auto 5, which launches less than a month after Saints Row 4, either. Again, Boone cited Saints Row 4's differences as the means by which it will stand out against Rockstar's giant.

Yesterday, Volition's Scott Phillips said that if the Saints Row series is to proceed after the fourth installment it may "continue in a different direction."

Saints Row 4 will be released on August 20th in North America and on August 23rd in Europe.
