Driveclub developers talk up PS4 technology

July 8, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Evolution Studios reiterates claim that PS4 is most powerful console in existence.

In an interview with GamingBolt, Evolution Studios gives high praise to the power of the Playstation 4, and how they were able to leverage that power to bring a high level of graphical detail to Driveclub.

Evolution Studios' Managing Director Col Rogers reiterated the earlier claim that the PS4 is the most powerful console ever, particularly in terms of graphics. He explains that atmospheric details such as clouds and lightning are simulated live and randomly generated every time. It works in such a way that no matter where you are logistically in the game, you would be able to ascertain that these clouds and other effects would move and act as they would in real life. Furthermore, Rogers points out that they have actually mapped out the stars in game, in such a way that you could actually identify your favorite constellations in the game.

In terms of the cars themselves, Rogers recounts that one of their artists, Neon, had a car model corrected, just for the right size of screw heads on the car's floor mats. Again, Rogers talks about his personal experience as a car enthusiast and how it was exciting for him that they could reach this level of detail.

Now, the game's roads will not be 100 % accurate to the real world, but have definitely been based on real life roads on those locations. Evolution has gone the extra mile of using digital elevation model data, or DEM data, to ensure the accuracy of the geometry of particular race tracks to the areas they're based on. Digital elevation model data is a form of mapping areas that takes height information in consideration. It's the same tech used to map out the moon and other planets.

This is a lot of big talk about the Playstation 4's power for sure. Driveclub has yet to get a release date.
