Fez on XBLA is Finally Getting Patched

July 4, 2013 by Stephen Daly

After a year Fez is finally being fixed on Xbox 360.

Phil Fish, the creator of Fez, has confirmed that the game is to finally be patched on Xbox Live Arcade after Microsoft announced that they had dropped fees for patches in April.

Taking to Twitter Fish wrote:

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: we're going to patch FEZ on XBLA!

— PHIL FISH (@PHIL_FISH) July 4, 2013

Fez has remained largely broken on Xbox 360 since June 2012 when Fish refused to issue a patch for the game saying he would not do so, "Because Microsoft would charge us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game."

This was after an initial patch had failed to improve the performance of the game. Under Microsoft's previous policy the first patch was free with developers being charged thereafter.

Last month Microsoft confirmed that they had dropped patch fees for XBLA titles in April. Sony has waived all patch fees for several years the company's Adam Boyes revealed in March.

Fish has been an outspoken critic of Microsoft and has said Fez 2 will not be releasing on Xbox. It's not clear if the policy change has impacted that decision but the inability to self-publish on Xbox 360 or Xbox One remains an issue for many indie developers.
