League of Legends Player Thrown in Jail for Violent Comments

June 28, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Not all bad comments on the internet go unnoticed.

At times, it seems like you can say just about anything you want on the internet without facing repercussions. There’s a fair amount of ambiguity when it comes to a player’s identity, and that leads to normal people behaving in highly abnormal ways. It can be difficult to listen to over Xbox Live or other popular services, but even when you’re hiding behind a screen name, it’s important to watch what you say.

Justin Carter, an 18-year-old member of the League of Legends community, decided to take an argument he was having with a fellow player to Facebook. During the debate, Carter referenced shooting up a school, something you don’t exactly want to joke around about.

“Someone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,’" his father Jack Carter said to the Texas news station KVUE. "To which he replied 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ and the next two lines were lol and JK."

“JK” can’t fix everything. A woman saw his violent post, searched his address, and noticed that he was very close to a public school. She proceeded to call the police, leading to Carter’s arrest for making a terrorist threat. His father argued that his son’s comments were sarcastic and nothing to worry about, but as of now, the young adult faces eight years of jail time.

We’ve seen interesting behavior come from the League of Legends community in the past, but this is a truly bizarre case. An online petition asking for Carter's release is currently floating around, but for now, it looks like he'll have to face the full consequences of a few misplaced online remarks.
