Xbox One and PS4 Demand to be Met by AMD

June 26, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

AMD is ready to meet all your next-gen demands.

As of now, no one who’s pre-ordered either an Xbox One or PS4 knows when they’ll be getting their next-generation hardware. That’s due in big part to the fact that neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced official release dates, but it’s also because of the massive demand for both consoles. There are often shortages when it comes to major hardware debuts, but chip manufacturer AMD has assured the world that it’s ready to meet all the demands this year.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Saeid Moshkelani, AMD's corporate vice president and general manager of Semi-Custom Business, made it known that no matter how high the demand might be, the company is ready and waiting to meet it.

"From a manufacturing perspective, in a year we ship tens of millions of units," Moshkelani said. "So we have a very strong manufacturing base for our APUs and discrete graphics. We leverage the same manufacturing infrastructure to develop for game consoles. So the volumes were not something that actually raised an eyebrow for us, because we're already in high-volume manufacturing."

It hasn’t been easy developing for these powerful pieces of hardware, but splitting into separate teams has allowed the company to divide and conquer.

"They are very complex projects, very complex designs, and it doesn't happen overnight. It has been a journey of over two years in development to get to today," he said. "There were different teams that were dedicated to these projects, working with the customer and collaborating with them to develop these chips."

If this is really the case, we could actually see a smooth launch for both the Xbox One and PS4 this fall. Fingers crossed.
