PS4, Xbox One Smash Pre-Order Records on Amazon

June 21, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The numbers coming from Amazon are pretty staggering.

People are interested in the next-generation of gaming hardware. If you couldn’t tell from the trending topics on Twitter during E3 and the hundreds of thousands of comments concerning DRM and 24-hour check-ins, maybe a few pre-order figures will do the trick. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One not only bested the majority of pre-order records on the highly popular Amazon.com, but the figures provided show that the previous numbers recorded have been absolutely blown away over the past few weeks.

The week of E3 was when everything really took off for Amazon, according to IGN. It was Amazon's biggest pre-order week ever, which included a staggering 2,500 next-gen console purchases per minute. The prices, policies, and software were all prominently displayed during this week, and because of all the hype surrounding the event, there was a 4,000 percent increase in console purchases compared to last year's show. Of course, the only new console people were talking about in 2012 was the Wii U, and we all know how that’s turned out for Nintendo.

To think, too, that this was all when the Xbox One still had its original policies in place. Since that time, Microsoft has decided to change many of the features that were first pitched to consumers on May 21. People were still motivated enough to buy day-one pre-orders for PS4 and Xbox One, which were "nearly two times that of all video game sales on Black Friday last year.” Expect a massive battle between these two hardware giants this fall.
