Minecraft Developer Discusses Update 1.6, Horses

June 20, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Developer discusses details of upcoming Minecraft updates.

Speaking on Twitch TV last week Mojang's Jens 'Jeb' Bergensten spoke about the updates players can expect to see in Minecraft over the coming months.

Among the changes being made to the game is the 1.6 "Horse Update"; which will be released before July and, as the name suggests, brings horses, donkeys, mules, horse armour and hay bales. Undead horses will not be included as they didn't fit the game well but mapmakers will be able to add them from the game files.

Bergensten also revealed that the developers may revisit dragons at some point in the future.

Mob attributes have been added for custom map makers while they've switched to Java 6 as part of Update 1.6. A new launcher has been added and is necessary for Plug-in API. Also coming with the update is OpenGL 2.0 and an updated LWJGL version.

Following on from his talk Bergensten held a question and answer session in which he revealed that Update 1.7 could center around oceans and biomes. He revealed that if there is a biome update it'll probably add temples and dungeons but players shouldn't expect chairs and tables in the near future.

He also said there was a slight chance the game could make to Steam but it's unlikely. Bergensten also spoke about an Achievement system which would need to be stored on their server but said it won't be coming anytime soon

The possibility of HD skins was discussed and he said it's a possibilty and he wants to update the whole skin system at some point.

Speaking about Minecraft Realms, which is currently in closed Alpha testing, Bergensten said that the main goal of the service is to make it easy for parents to host a server for their children but that Reamls will also be able to host competitive services.
