Nintendo: PS4 Price Puts No Pressure on Wii U

June 18, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Not much will shake Nintendo during this console cycle.

The PlayStation 4’s price point was a bit of a shocker. After seeing Microsoft slap a fat $499 sticker on its Xbox One, it was widely assumed that Sony would just follow the Xbox maker’s lead. Instead, we saw Sony come out swinging against Microsoft in every possible way. It looks as if the two companies will be ferociously butting heads over the entire generation, but the low cost of the PS4 has to affect Nintendo in some capacity, right? Not according to Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime, it doesn’t.

Fils-Aime had an extended chat with Kotaku during E3 week, where the Nintendo big shot had a chance to detail his company’s plans for the future. Even if he’d like to focus on Wii U and not everyone else, it is pretty difficult to ignore the boisterous competition.

"It puts no pressure on us at all," Fils-Aime said about the price of the other consoles. "Sony and Microsoft are going to do what they're going to do. My bet is that there are going to be more announcements the closer we get to whatever their launch date is."

Sony and Microsoft’s consumers aren’t Fils-Aime’s consumers. He’s aware they’re there, and would probably like to recruit them to the holy word of Mario, but it’s not his job to sit and watch the rest of the industry battle it out.

"From my perspective, I can't focus on that. I have to focus on: How do we satisfy the needs of all of the consumers out there with Nintendo products? How do we make sure they understand our proposition? How do we make sure they're excited about the software that we offer?” he continued. “And from that standpoint we're going to let our competition do what they're going to do."

The power of the console is a big sticking point for most companies, but in the eyes of Nintendo, it’s all about the creativity. We’ll see how the pans out this holiday season.
