The Witcher 3 DLC to be Free on PC, Platform Holders to Decide Console Prices

June 17, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Free DLC is great, but it can’t be available for all platforms.

CD Projekt RED is aiming to deliver a user-friendly experience each and every time it launches a new piece of software. Where Microsoft is doubling down on DRM and daily check-ins with the Xbox One, the developers behind The Witcher franchise want their fans to experience as much of their games as possible without too great a hassle. This philosophy also translates to The Withcer 3: Wild Hunt’s DLC plans, as the game’s core updates will be free to anyone who owns the game.

This comes straight from the development team, which recently spoke to Rock Paper Shotgun after debuting gameplay at E3. CD Projekt head Marcin Iwinski is going to do his best to deliver the same great experience across all platforms, but really, his team can’t control how the platform holders want to handle DLC and content updates.

“It’s too early to talk specifics, but definitely all the DLCs and updates will be free,” he said. “Of course, we’ll see what the platform holders will allow – what we can do for free [on next-gen consoles]. I mean, there are different business models on consoles. From our standpoint, we’ll definitely do everything we can to deliver the same experience across all platforms.”

Let’s not get crazy, though. If a significant piece of narrative-driven content is added to Wild Hunt, it won’t be released as a free download.

“Should we decide to do some big expansions or something, we’ll expect gamers to pay for it. But again, it’s all value for money. I think $15-$20 for new gameplay is a pretty honest and fair deal. But additional weapons and fixes, those of course come as part of the package,” Iwinski continued.

Whether it’s fun combat or a living open world you’re looking for, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a project you should keep an eye on. This next-gen RPG will launch on PC and consoles early next year.
