PS4 Interface Demo Shows Off Video Sharing, Background Installation

June 13, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Switch between a game and a video with a double-tap of the PS button.

Amongst all the trailers for PS4 games that have come out of E3, Sony has also produced a video that demonstrates the user interface for the console. It's a super-corny “day in the life” type of thing following a guy called Will who seems to live a happy life drinking orange juice, playing guitar, and sucking at games, but it does show off quite a few features.

First up, Will is browsing the home screen when he sees that a friend called Sarah has unlocked a platinum trophy for Knack. On the following screen, he can like her achievement, compare his trophies with hers, and jump right into playing the game, which he does. Turns out he sucks, however, so he checks out a video Sarah has uploaded to find out how she did it. A double-tap on the PS button and he can switch right back into the game, kind of like how you can switch Apps on an iOS device by double-tapping the home button.

Later on, Will gets a call to the earpiece he happens to be wearing from another friend called Brian who's playing Killzone: Shadow Fall, asking him for help in the multiplayer. Except Will doesn't have the game, presumably because he's still busy with Knack: “Dude, I don't got that, man. I gotta go and get it,” he says, before getting some orange juice. When he does decide to buy the game from the PS4 interface, he gets to choose to download the multiplayer portion first so that he can jump straight in. The game installs in the background while he carries on playing Knack.

When Will has managed to join in with the Killzone fun (surprise: he's not great at it), we find out that Sarah can still get in on the action even though she's away from her PS4. She uses her phone to chat with her friends, check out the video Brian has made to show Will how it's done, and even remotely purchase the game herself, though it's not clear whether her PS4 will turn itself on and start to install the game.

So what do you think? Do these features seem like the kinds of things you'll use?
