Assassin’s Creed 4’s Under the Black Flag Tumblr helps you Brush up on Pirate History

June 3, 2013 by Andrea Castellano

The Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Tumblr page gives you a historic timeline of pirates.

Everyone knows about pirates, but perhaps you don't know of their origins or significant events in their history.

Before the release of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Ubisoft wants to help you brush up on your pirate history with a interactive and illustrated timeline leading up to events of Assassin's Creed 4.

The Tumblr features a timeline of notable pirates and events that started the trend of plundering. Pirates don't come into the world holding swords and plundering ships, someone must adopt the lifestyle.

Take Benjamin Horingold for example, a poor man stuck in Jamaica with not promising future. Determined to change his fortunes, he rounds up a crew of 75 men and leads them to raid the seas surrounding Florida and Cuba for the next 6 months. In their raids, they amass copper, rum, silver and silks with only 3 armed canoes.

Their 6 month journey helped them accumulate $2,339,370 worth of goods.

But many took notice of the pirate life.

Probably the most notable pirate, Blackbeard, approached his raids differently. Blackbeard mastered psychological warfare and aimed to scare merchants into surrendering. To do so he would light the ends of his beard and hair on fire, allowing him to gather riches without much effort, loss of men, or gold.

To learn more about the era of pirates or Blackbeard's capture of Queen Anne's Revenge ship, you can read and follow the timeline on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's Tumblr page.

Assassin's Creed 4 will release this October 29th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. Dates for the Xbox One and PS4 still remain unannounced.
