Remember Me’s Creative Director Discusses the Evolution of Nilin

May 31, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Nilin went through three distinct design stages.

In a recent Capcom Unity community interview Remember Me's creative director Jean-Maxime Morris answered fan question and adressed the evolution of Nilin, the game's protagonist, during development.

Morris revealed that Nilin has gone through three distinct phases over the course of the game's development. The initial phase was apparently nothing like she now appears being described as a character who had stepped out of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. She originally wore khaki pants a knee lenght rain coat which was intended to reflect on global warming and the need to keep off the increasing rain which climate change caused in the Paris of 2084, when the game is set.

When DontNod Entertainment devised the second iteration of Nilin she was "much more of a character that could take on missions" with Morris describing her as a spy. For about two years this version of Nilin persisted and you can still see artwork of the character wearing a futuristic style suit and carrying a briefcase from this period. The team scrapped this design due to its similarities with aesthetics in BioWare's Mass Effect.

DontNod wanted Nilin to look futuristic but the team also wanted people to be able to relate to her and this is how they arrived at the final design.

While we previously reported that publishers turned down the game due to Nilin being female Morris has said the reaction has generally been positive.

"I'm glad that in 2013 things have changed, and things are changing," Morris commented. "People more and more, in the games industry, relate to female characters and that's very important to me becuase movies and books have been portraying female characters for hundreds if not thousands of years, and I think it's time our media grew up."

Remember Me is set to be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on June 4th in North America and on June 7th in Europe.
