Kaz Hirai: PS4 is ‘First and Foremost’ a Game Console

May 30, 2013 by Stephen Daly

More PS4 features are set to be revealed but they’ll take a backseat to gaming.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has commented that the PlayStation 4 is "first and foremost" a game console and said that while there are more non-gaming features to be announced for the system they'll take a backseat to the PS4's primary function.

Speaking to reporters at the D11 confernece today Hirai noted "The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great videogame console that appeals to videogamers. If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us will all our consoles, including the PS3."

Hirai did go on to say that additional services and features will be announced for the PS4 but that they will not be the focus of the system.

"Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it's first and foremost a videogame console," he concluded as reported by The Verge.

GamesBeat meanwhile carried additional comments by Hirai who stated "I fundamentally believe that the initial market that we need to make sure we appeal to with any new platform… is really the gaming audience. They will be the supporters of your platform and they will help propel the installed base."

In relation to services on PS4 he added "But that's after we establish the platform as a videogame platform. We want to make sure that we are there for the gamers with our PS4 as well. They will go beyond this, but they'll definitely start with gamers first."

He finished by saying "For us, it's all about the gamers."

As Sony has yet to give many details as to the entertainment capabilities of the PS4 they may have set aside a significant portion of their pre-E3 press conference to services which Microsoft largely focused on at the Xbox One's reveal.

Sony has every single one of their first party studios developing for PS4 and Mark Cerny, the system's lead architect, has said the console will have the strongest launch lineup of any PlayStation platform.

The PS4 is set to be launched later this year.
