Yakuza HD Wii U Release an ‘Experiment’

May 28, 2013 by Andrea Castellano

Producer on Yakuza sees the HD Wii U release as an opportunity to gauge interest.

Both Yakuza 1 & 2 HD will release on the Nintendo Wii U later this August, but the producer on the Yakuza series sees its purpose differently.

Speaking with Yakuza producer Toshihiro Nagoshi, in regards to the Wii U release of Yakuza, he described it as "an experiment" to gauge the interest of Wii U owners interested in playing a game like Yakuza. He later went onto say:

"Our real intention is that we want to see how people will respond."

His experiment does not translate into an automatic Yakuza release, despite his aims not targeting a "smash hit" for the HD releases.

The Yakuza series most notably grew on the PlayStation platform so this experiment doesn't mean it will soon transfer over to the Wii U. When speaking of the Wii U audience, Nagoshi said that" the existing [Wii U] users are different [from PlayStation owners]…"

When asked of the idea of a Yakuza title on the 3DS, Nagoshi answered with a chuckle saying "it's not possible."

As the Wii U platform currently stands, the recent poor stretch of sales doesn't help to increase the possibility of a financially successful release of the HD games.  Since you shouldn't expect Nagoshi to make a decision purely off of Wii U owner reception, expect the future of the Yakuza series on Wii U to depend on the growth of the user base.
