Mojang’s Scrolls Receives Official Launch Trailer

May 27, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Scrolls enters open beta in just a week.

It’s unlikely that anything will ever take Minecraft’s place as developer Mojang’s flagship product. More than 10 million downloads have been tracked from the studio’s sandbox title, but that doesn’t mean that the talented men and women within the Swedish house aren’t going to try to make magic twice. Scrolls, a strategy RPG developed for the PC and Mac is just around the corner, as the game’s launch trailer has just sneaked its way onto the official Mojang YouTube page.

We haven’t heard too much about Scrolls. The fact that it’s both a trading card game and a board game has been made clear on numerous occasions, but it seems like fans haven’t exactly been shouting about the game’s mechanics from the mountain tops since it first stepped into closed alpha last year. However, a solid chunk of gameplay can be witnessed in the above video, which showcases deck building, online battles, and the ability to trade with other players. That fact that the list of cards will continue to expand as time moves on is stressed, too.

Just the name of this project was being disputed over the past couple of years. Bethesda and parent company ZeniMax, since they own the title “The Elder Scrolls,” wanted to see Mojang give this indie game a new moniker. The whole thing even went to court before Notch finally Tweeted that the name was going to stay. The press that surrounded the situation has quieted down quite a bit since 2011, but with the game entering open beta June 3, maybe people will once again place Scrolls at the fronts of their minds.
