Command & Conquer Lead Dev: “C&C 4 is a stain”

May 10, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

The developers of Command & Conquer admit the faults of C&C 4 and wish to make amends for it.

Victory Games intends to make up for the lackluster quality of C&C 4 in its upcoming Command & Conquer title. Instead of defending the game as one might expect, the game's lead designer Samuel Bass was very open with his opinions about the game, which had been developed at EA Los Angeles.

“The first thing we said was, we need to kind of wash the stain of C&C 4 away,” Bass said in a developer diary published on GameInformer.

“To do that, you really have to get back to your roots, back to what it was made your fans your fans in the first place.”

Victory devs believe that to get back to the game's roots, they are designing base building that "doesn't feel like a chore", harvesting that doesn't require micromanagement, and what they refer to as a "focus on fast action and lots of viable strategies." Each unit will have upgrades, and player powers, such as the ability to call down missile strikes and launch tactical nukes will have to "feel visceral."

Command & Conquer is a complete reboot of the C&C franchise and was originally announced as Command & Conquer Generals 2. It has since been transformed into a free-to-play platform, and is powered by the Frostbite engine.

The game is currently playable as a beta, so be sure to sign up for it here.
