GTFO, Documentary on Sexism in the Games Industry, Hits its Kickstarter Goal

May 6, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Backers have contributed more than $20,000 with mere days left to go.

GTFO, the documentary movie about sexism in the video game industry from filmmaker Shannon Sun-Higginson, has surpassed its Kickstarter goal of $20,000. The campaign only has four days left, but it looks like the recent spate of press coverage has brought it to the attention of backers just in time, and 846 people have now pledged money towards the project.

The current total stands at $23,310. Sun-Higginson hasn't set out any stretch goals – presumably she wasn't sure if the campaign would even reach its initial goal – but has laid out exactly how the money will be divided up: 30% on shoot expenses, 30% on post-production, 30% on licensing right for things like footage from games, and 10% on festival submissions and promotion.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this project is that Sun-Higginson identifies as “just a casual gamer” and “an outsider”, so this isn't just one woman with a personal vendetta looking for the money needed to exact her revenge. Sun-Higginson says that she was “shocked” to hear about the abuse that many female gamers endure – she gives examples from fatuglyorslutty.com – and so feels the need to show the rest of the non-gaming world what this small but loud side of the games industry is like.

Anyone who is interested in getting a copy of the documentary when it's done can still pledge for the next four days and get either a digital download or – if they pledge $50 or more – a DVD copy, with additional extras the more you pledge.
