Well, it was only a matter of time, but the world’s most successful video game console's time in the hallowed halls of America's largest retailer that's dedicated solely to video games is soon coming to an end. June 1st is the date in which GameStop will no longer accept anything PlayStation 2 related
Word doesn't come from any official statement but from a shopper who happened to be at his or her local GameStop and who also happens to frequent Reddit.
The retailer largely thrives on the second hand market, so it must be assumed that the demand for PS2 goods is so low that it's no longer worth the time and money to accept the final vestige of the last generation of gaming.
Last year was when GameStop stopped accepting anything GameCube related, and their refusal to take anything Xbox 1 related goes even further back. It's hard to say what will happen to the existing PS2 stock.
No doubt some PS2 games will remain available… many places still have an assortment of Game Boy Advance games, even to this very day… but will be further relegated to the back corner of the store.
Earlier this year, Sony stopped manufacturing the console, just a few short months shy of its 13th birthdate. To date, over 155 million units have been sold, and last we checked, it was still hanging in there, in terms of popularity. Except at GameStop, or so it would seem.
So if you’ve been meaning to get rid of your copy of Madden 2003, it’s now or never.
