Revamped XCOM Shooter Days Away from Reveal

April 24, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

2K Marin has a big XCOM announcement planned in the coming days.

The squad-based, tactical shooter that once carried the XCOM name may be down, but it isn’t out. In a matter of days, developer 2K Marin will finally reveal what’s been done with this 2010 shooter, which has seemingly “undergone an evolution.”

In a blog post published this morning, 2K Games teased what’s sure to be an information blowout on a game that we just recently thought had no future. We don’t yet know what alterations have been made, but it’s clear that “the XCOM universe is expanding.”

“In the coming days the world will get a fresh look at the long-awaited squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin. Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011,” post reads. “Firaxis’ critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM.”

Yesterday’s 'Russian Meteor Lies' video ignited interest in the project which, according to a few registered domains, has been renamed to The Bureau. What was once a simple shooter set in a popular universe has been re-imagined, and while there’s still no solid answer for what’s been done to the project, it won’t be long until all the beans are spilled.

“The creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration. 2K’s culture allows our studios the freedom to refine their visions, to explore new ideas, and to deliver the best possible experiences for players,” 2K wrote. “Through this exploration, 2K Marin has refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts.”

Last year, we praised the efforts of Firaxis Games and called its product “a true successor to the XCOM legacy.” Let’s just hope Marin can keep the gravy train rollin'.
