Sources close to Square Enix have informed French gaming website gameblog.fr that the long-awaited Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be coming to both the PlayStation 3 and Sony's next-gen platform, the PlayStation 4.
According to the source, the decision to bring the game to the PS4 was made two years ago, and that development of the project has been anything but smooth sailing. Fortunately, they are able to confirm that the game is "definitely not canceled" and that it will be released.
Interestingly enough, the source has informed the website that the studio has no intention of bringing the game to the Xbox 360, as it's exclusive to Sony hardware alone, because Sony offered to provide Square Enix with financial support in bringing the game to the PlayStation 4.
Final Fantasy XIII Versus was first announced alongside Final Fantasy XIII, a game which has since seen the release of a sequel and another forthcoming title later this year titled Lightning Returns. Like its counterpart, Versus is also set in Square Enix's so-called "Fabula Nova Crystallis" setting, but is much more of an action RPG than the other games. The game is being headed up by the director of Kingdom Hearts, Tetsuya Nomura, who intended to deliver a next-gen (at the time) action RPG experience with the game. However, beyond its initial presentation, little has been shown of the game over the past seven years.
Regardless of the developments with Final Fantasy Versus XIII, it remains to be seen whether the game will be showcased at this year's E3 2013 as its own title, or whether it'll make a new debut as Final Fantasy XV—if it even appears at all.
