Injustice Sells Big in UK, Claims BioShock Infinite’s Top Spot

April 22, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The familiar DC faces seem to have translated to dollars and cents for Injustice: Gods Among Us.

It may not say “Mortal Kombat” on the box, but NetherRealm’s Injustice: Gods Among Us has all the elements of the fighting game studio’s staple franchise. What gives Injustice some character, though, is its deep roster of popular fighters based on the DC Comics brand, and it looks like these super-powered combatants have helped push the title to the number one spot for its first week in the UK.

It’s been over a year since a fighting game sat atop the sales charts in the UK, as it was 2012's THQ’s UFC Undisputed 3 that last got the honor. This time, it took legendary heroes like Superman and Batman to climb to the top, knocking off the three-week run of Irrational Games’ BioShock Infinite.

Nintendo’s 3DS RPG Fire Emblem: Awakening also made a splash in its UK debut, landing in third. However, the late appearance of the strategy title in this territory did more than just make a few franchise fans happy – it also moved hardware. A 49 percent week-on-week increase can be attributed to both Fire Emblem’s success and the limited edition blue 3DS XL release.

Familiar faces like FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and Tomb Raider also had strong weeks, all landing in the top 10. The full list of 20 games for the week ending April 20 can be seen below:

1. Injustice: Gods Among Us
2. BioShock Infinite
3. Fire Emblem: Awakening
4. Tomb Raider
5. Defiance
6. FIFA 13
7. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
8. Luigi's Mansion 2
9. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14
10. Far Cry 3
11. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
12. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
13. Assassin's Creed III
14. Skylanders Giants
15. Gears of War: Judgment
16. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2
17. Need for Speed: Most Wanted
18. God of War: Ascension
19. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
20. Sleeping Dogs

Along with this comercial achievement, Injustice: Gods Among Us also saw a great deal of critical success right out of the gate. Currently, the game has an average score of 81 out of 100 on Metacritic.
