The Evil Within Gets A Debut Trailer

April 22, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

But instead of Mikami tapping into Night of the Living Dead, it appears to be his take on Saw instead.

Earlier this weekend we disclosed the first details pertaining to the latest from Tango Gameworks, the brand new studio founded by Shinji Mikami, generally regarded as the creator of the survival horror genre, and whose upcoming game promises to instill luster back into the genre, which over the years has become significantly watered down.

Well, time to for the first bit of footage related to the game. Behold the first teaser trailer for The Evil Within, courtesy of IGN:

Sorry folks expecting to see a first look at the visuals of the game. But a live-action clip is hardly unique for a Mikami, who clearly wears his love for American horror flicks on his sleeve, like a badge of honor.

Whereas Resident Evil 2's live-action clip featured the classic American horror movie staple directed by the godfather of the zombie movie genre himself, George Romero, this one clearly taps into contemporary American horror flicks, a la Saw.

Though once again, the game will be a "return to pure survival horror." Which means dealing with limited resources, aka rationing out bullets and encountering a meager amount of health pick-ups.

And don’t forget trying to figuring out traps and puzzles, all without trying to be eaten, maimed, or whatever else of course. All elements that many gamers had (supposedly) become bored with, but would later miss when survival horror’s once glorious poster child, Resident Evil, trying adjusting the formula for the times, but with less than admirable results.

Actually, at the end of the day, limited resources and obscure puzzles can be annoying, if done poorly. But when Mikami does it, that's an entirely different story.
