Remember Me’s Creative Director Discusses Gender Equality in Games

April 16, 2013 by Stephen Daly

"We have a long way to go" says Morris.

Remember Me's creative director, Jean Max Morris, has spoken to ShackNews about gender equality in games and creating the character of Nilin,

"We didn't think of gender equality being a major theme in the game, but thinking back on the world we designed, it is true that women have key positions in its governance," Morris commented, adding "In 2013, we have a long way to go in terms of gender equality, so take this as a subconscious militant act.

"You have to avoid the pitfalls of making her just a damsel in distress or a sex bomb, because this is what you think would appeal most to the hordes of men that constitute your fan base.

"But if you respect your public, then you refuse to dumb your work down, and eventually it pay back because what you do is different. But I'm not saying we're the only ones. I'm quite happy to see that more and more games feature female protagonists," Morris finished.

Morris has previously revealed that some publishers refused to take on Remember Me because Nilin is female "We had some that siad, 'well, we don't want to publish it because it's not going to succeed. You can't have a female character in games. It has to be a male character, simple as that'," he said.

"The fact that our core market is males 15-25 is not an excuse. We need to be able to create, and respect the audience enough to believe that they can be smart enough to identify with that type of character," Morris added.

Remember Me is set to be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on June 4th in North America and June 7th in Europe.
