Star Command is Nearly Ready but Only 30% of the Developer’s Original Vision

April 10, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

The iOS version will be with Apple within the next couple of days.

Star Command, the spaceship management game for iOS (and in future Android) whose PC/Mac version managed to raise 150% of its Kickstarter goal, will soon be on its way to Apple in preparation for its launch on the App Store. The team – and specifically Jordan Coombs – announced the news in the latest update on the PC/Mac version's Kickstarter campaign, writing yesterday that they would submit the game “in about 48 hours”.

It's good news, since the game has been in development for two years, but it's tinged with disappointment too as Jordan adds that while the team is “VERY proud” of the game it isn't everything they'd hoped it would be. In fact, he estimates that the final product represents “probably 30% of the original vision”. It won't feature ships from different eras, for example, or “research, a robust diplomatic engine on par with civilization, the ability to capture and torture enemies, and […] the ability to invade other ships and beam down to planets.”

What the game will include, however, is what Jordan calls “the core of the idea”, which in this case is ship management with the ability to explore the galaxy, hire a crew, meet aliens, and make life-or-death decisions. For those who might be disappointed at what the game won't have when it launches, Jordan both reminds us what Kickstarter is really about (getting behind an idea) and says that the team will bring extra features to the game in future updates.

Star Command doesn't have a solid release date because that's partly up to Apple, but it should be available for iOS soon, and on Android around a month after that.
