Capcom Easing Up On Digital Re-Releases Of Fighters

April 10, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Well, there goes hopes for Tech Romancer HD.

Remember how excited you were when Capcom announced the re-release of Darkstalkers onto Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network? Well, as it turns out, you were in the minority.

It would appear that sales of Darkstalkers Resurrection was not all that strong, and the same goes for similar offerings. Even additions like HD visuals and online play have not been enough to get consumers excited.

As a result, Capcom will be slowing dow the re-released of their fighting back catalogue, reports Siliconera. According to Capcom USA Senior VP Christian Svensson:

"New development in the form of updated versions of SF2, SF3, MvC2, MvC1, Marvel Super Heroes,  Darkstalkers, Puzzle Fighter etc. Sadly, I think we’ve probably run the course of feasible titles here given the droppoff we’ve seen in sales with each new introduction.

It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches."

One initial reaction might be "oh well, it's been a great run." And it's true; we've been blessed with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Again, with a host of enhancements.

But there are still plenty of Capcom fighters that are being left to the way side thanks to this move. Games such as Street Fighter Alpha 3, Rival Schools, Power Stone, Tech Roomancer, and more.

Is Capcom missing the boat here? Or are they simply responding to what the market wants, or doesn’t want? Then again, given all the different Street Fighter re-releases, perhaps that Rival Schools re-release should have been more of a priority.
