Apple adds Subscriptions to App Store

February 15, 2011

Apple moves to provide developers with a subscription system

Apple has gone an extra mile to make an extra buck by adding a new subscription service to its App Store that developers can use to claim subscription fees from their users.

The subscription option was first introduced when News Corp's digital newspaper, The Daily, was launched on the iOS. The system contains support for in-app and in-game purchases with subscriptions available in weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or annual increments depending on the developer's preferences.

Each subscription can be managed and canceled from the Apple account page.

Although Apple will keep a portion of the revenue earned through subscriptions made through its service, they have left it an option for developers to sell subscriptions through their own independent portals.

“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 per cent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 per cent and Apple earns nothing,” Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs stated.

“All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app.

"We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.”
