PixelJunk Inc. Has You Run a Soup Factory in a Procedurally Generated Open World

March 28, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

PixelJunk 1-6 gets a name and a teaser trailer.

Q-Games has announced the title for the newest game in the PixelJunk series that began with PixelJunk Racers in 2007 and has included the abstract PixelJunk Eden (2008) and the recent music visualiser PixelJunk 4am (2012). The developer's new game, PixelJunk Inc, has the same stylistic charm as fans of the series will expect, with a new and wacky concept behind it. It's a game all about manufacturing soup.

Of course, there's more to it than that one-line synopsis would suggest. The game is designed to be played cooperatively with up to three friends, so you work together to build and maintain the factory that will produce the all-important soup. As you'll see in the teaser trailer Q-Games has provided, movement in the game is very much in the platformer style, with a 2D world that you can run and jump – and sometimes float – around in.

That world is apparently a procedural open-world sandbox. It looks like you'll have to sculpt the landscape to suit your needs, for example digging passageways so that you can install lifts, or exploring further afield to find the materials you need. The environment is also populated by soup-hungry wildlife, so you'll build turrets to keep them away. Aside from guns, you can also build robots to operate parts of the factory for you. Part tower defence, part factory sim, all wonderfully different strategy game.

When the game is ready, it'll launch on Steam. Are you interested in running your own complicated and colourful soup factory?
