InXile Talks Torment: Tides of Numenera’s Kickstarter and How the Game’s Shaping Up

March 27, 2013 by Stephen Daly

InXile hopes to bring in celebrity talent as Torment features being fine-tuned.

Following the overwhelming success of inXile's Torment: Tides of Numenera Kickstarter the game's project lead Kevin Saunders and designer/writer Colin McComb have spoken to GameBanshee about their huge success.

"We had a lot of awareness built up in advance," said Saunders. "Fans surmised what we were up to in December and we admitted it soon after."

McComb revealed the project is bringing in "a number of professional writers including (hopefully) Patrick Rothfuss," an American fantasy novelist and lecturer. "And by the time you read this we'll have announced Chris Avellone's involvement in the project (hopefully)" – as it stands the Tides of Numeria Kickstarter requires another $250,000 to bring Rothfuss aboard and another $400,000 for Obsidian's Avellone to become involved.

The game is being designed to allow for companion-less play with Saunders remarking "We do intend to allow solo play (i.e., no companions – the game is single player in any case), but not to cater to it. We will certainly have very memorable and intriguing characters, and companions, and those who decide to go alone will miss out on all of the work we'll be putting into making the companions great."

Saunders revealed inXile are planning to "fine-tune" the dialogue tree from previous games as some believe that particular feature is showing its age while skills are being "tightened up for torment."

The Torment: Tides of Numenera Kickstarter achieved its goal of $900,000 in just six hours and currently stands at $3.1 million with nine days to go.
