Visceral and Crystal Dynamics Devs Form Space Dust Studios

March 27, 2013 by Stephen Daly

A team of five core developers are working on an indie PC game.

Experienced developers from Dead Space maker Visceral and Tomb Raider producer Crystal Dynamics have come together to form Space Dust Studios which will develop an indie PC game over the next 18 months.

Located in Melbourne, Australia, the new studio's first project does not yet have a title. The studio's website teases 'Space Dust Studios is a new 'AAA indie' videogames studio. We are a team of senior developers previously from EA, Crystal Dynamics, Citerion and Atari. Now we're going indie… and making the games we've always wanted to make!"

According to Tsumea, a developer website for studios in Australia and New Zealand, one of Space Dust's founders, Nathan Thomas, secured funding for the studio from the Australian Interactive Games Fund.

Thomas' pitch to the Fund gives some insight into what Space Dust hopes to achieve:

"In our particular case, our core team consists of five senior developers, with collectively over 50 years of AAA local and international development experience (including programming on the recently released Dead Space 3). Our medium scale PC project has a planned 18 month development cycle, and will require significant local staffing resources during production. We also have interest from talented senior developers who are eager to return to Melbourne and join our project.

"We would benefit immensly from a pre-production 'seed' investment to produce the materials needed to attract the production investment required to complete the project. Our overall production will exceed AUD 1 million (inclusive of a professional marketing plan budget.)"
