MeeGo Gives up on Netbooks

February 11, 2011 by Eric Swain

Meego stops with netbooks, can you blame them?

Anyone who knows Linux knows that there are just a ton of distributions to choose from. Some of you may have heard of a new one called MeeGo. Meego was a Linux based OS for netbooks, netphones and entry-level desktops, but the company is pulling the plug on the project. Judging from recent developments, it would appear that the company wishes for everyone to forget that they ever mentioned anything about netbooks in the first place. Check out the post from developer Andrew Wafaa, which reads as follows:

"I spoke to several people directly and indirectly involved with MeeGo, especially the Netbook UX, about the lack of info on the Netbook UX. Each one of them said the same thing – MeeGo is putting the Netbook UX into Maintanence Mode, stopping any further development on it, and only providing bug fixes for major issues. I asked if there was going to by any announcement, basically the answer was noting official. They're just going to let it drift away – just like netbooks themselves have."

Honestly, who can blame them? I think we can all agree that netbooks are just a waste of time and money with the proliferation of tablets and products like the iPad. If you think about it, netbooks are an unnecessary tier between tablets and full fledged laptops. Those who dont want to have a laptop with them all the time and want something slightly smaller can simply look towards devices like the Apple iPad for doing just as much as any netbook. It works great with Wi-Fi and a more expensive variant allows you to access persistent 3G.

Netbooks may well become a thing of the past.
