Saints Row 4 Developer Isn’t Concerned by Grand Theft Auto 5

March 22, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Volition feels there’s enough diversity in the open world genre for Saints Row 4 to stand out.

Volition producer Jim Boone has told Eurogamer that the studio isn't concerned by how close the release dates of Saints Row 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 are.

"Yeah, it's a big one, and we talk about it a lot," said Boone. "Obviously when they announced their date and it was so close to us – that was an interesting phenomenon. But honestly, the way that we tend to look at it is that here's this huge game that's coming out at the same time and it's going to sell a tonne. We know that, and it's unfortunate from that standpoint.

"But the thing we feel good about in general is that we're such a different game to what they are. If we were stylistically similar to the first Saints Row I'd be horrified right now. Saints Row the Third came out at the same time as Assassin's Creed but the games are so different in what they do.

"The genre's matured enough where you can have all these different styles and still be an open world game and be different. So I look at GTA 5 and think there's this massive game coming out, but I don't think with our superpowers and alien invasions that no-one will be comparing us to them," Boone finished.

It has also been revealed that the Enter the Dominatrix DLC, originally planned for Saints Row the Third, will be made available at some point in the future.

Boone commented "we liked what we were doing with Enter the Dominatrix, and we're planning on doing a director's cut for that as a DLC pack. So that will still see the light of day in a fairly modified way. It'll probably be released as Saints Row 4: Enter the Dominatrix, just from a marketing perspective."

Saints Row 4, which was revealed earlier this month, is set to be released on August 20th while Grand Theft Auto 5 has a planned release date of September 17th.
