Vlambeer: ‘It’s Almost Impossible to do F2P in a Non-Evil Way’

March 18, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

The makers of Super Crate Box and Ridiculous Fishing say it’s tough to do F2P in a bad way without sacrificing the game.

Ridiculous Fishing is out, and it's quickly become a fan favorite among games journalists—or at least me.

According to the Vlambeer, which conducted an AMA on Reddit today, they have designs to expand upon the game with new content. They are also considering an Android version, but have expressed that they are not sure what that would entail as of yet.

"We're definitely thinking about adding more content in the future, but it might be a while before we make it as good as we want it to be," said Vlambeer.

The game has faced some criticism from gamers for being priced at $2.99—almost two dollars more than the average mobile game. Asked whether they thought it was fair for games to be so cheaply priced, Vlambeer responded:

"We're not upset — it's just the way the market works at the moment. We do believe that developers shouldn't be scared to charge $3 for a game.

"The problem is that at $0.99, you'll need to sell endless amounts of copies to be able to survive as an indie developer. Most games don't even get close to that. A direct result of the whole race-to-the-bottom in prices is the prevalance (sic) of Free to Play on iOS – it seems to be a safer bet."

Vlambeer stated that it is "almost impossible" for developer—indie or otherwise—to do free-to-play in a "non-evil way" without putting the game on the crucible.

"Since its almost impossible to do F2P in a non-evil way and without sacrificing the elegance of your game design, we'll prefer to charge $3," they said.

Beyond their work on Ridiculous Fishing, the team at Vlambeer are currently working on Luftrausers for the PC and Mac. The game is intended for release on Steam.
