Randy Pitchford Claims Half-Life Evolved from Duke Nukem

February 4, 2011

Half-Life’s seminal gameplay and pacing evolved from 3D Realms’ Duke Nukem 3D.

Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford claims that the seminal gameplay of Valve's "Half-Life" evolved from "Duke Nukem".

Promoting his studio's upcoming "Duke Nukem Forever" in an interview with online gaming site PSM3, Randy Pitchford says his game is a combination of action gameplay and cognitive gameplay, "where you're exploring or solving puzzles, or there's an obstacle in your way that you have to find out how to overcome.

"It's a balance between these two things. Most shooters just focus on the action, not this pacing. Half-Life does it well; this kind of iterative gameplay that evolved from where Duke started.

"Forever goes a lot further with that. Another thing is interactivity. You're able to use and manipulate your environment, and not because you have to, but because you're curious. And when something happens, you're like 'Oh, that makes sense. I didn't expect that!' Which is surprising, fun and rewarding."

Gearbox plans to release "Duke Nukem Forever" this May.
