Crytek Chief: ‘Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die.’

March 4, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

It was strictly business, pure and simple.

Many were disheartened to hear news of the cancellation of Crysis 3 for the Wii U when the news first broke in early January. No doubt, mostly Wii U owners. Not long after, many began to speculate the exact reasons why. The cited lack of business drive wasn't good enough for some. Some suspected that the machine was simply not up to snuff. No doubt, mostly Wii U haters.

Certainly, news of Metro: Last Light having its plug pulled, which came almost immediately before Crysis 3's fate was sealed, contributed towards such speculation. Especially the part in which the game's creators went on record to state how underpowered and difficult the hardware is to handle.

Turns out, it honestly was strictly business. In a recent interview with VentureBeat, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli explains that the game was super close to actually coming out:

"We did have Crysis 3 running on the Wii U. We were very close to launching it. But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn’t launch on the Wii U ourselves — we don’t have a publishing license — Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die."

So there you have it. For whatever reason, EA didn't have enough confidence in Crysis 3 for the Wii U. It's such a shame that the publisher is so small, one with such limited resources that it has to carefully weigh every single release it greenlights. Hopefully one day they'll be in a position to able to take the occasional risk or two.

Wait a minute…
