Deep Down Will Help Capcom Test The Waters of PS4

March 1, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

Capcom’s new IP ‘Deep Down’ will allow the company to test the waters and help them to understand the PS4’s capabilities.

The risk-averse Capcom states that it is developing a new IP for release on the PlayStation 4 to test the waters, as it were. The studio has stated that it is unsure of how much success it would get by putting its money into the development of a Resident Evil or Street Fighter title.

Capcom announced its new IP, tentatively titled "Deep Down", at the PlayStation 4 conference last week. The publisher hopes that the D&D-inspired game will serve as a marker for what they can achieve on the new platform. The game is being developed with an all new engine designed to make full use of next-gen hardware.

Speaking to MCV, the game's producer Yoshinori Ono said that the reason they chose to develop a new IP is so that they can be free of any constraints that gamer expectations might have with pre-existing franchises.

"We wanted to be free to utilise the PS4's hardware capabilities and unique services without the constraints of working within an existing IP," said Ono, who is best known for his work on the Street Fighter franchise.

"Of course, the development experience we gain will put us in an even better position to bring our existing series to the console in a way that takes full advantage of its hardware and services."

He added that the hardware on the PlayStation 4 allowed Capcom to develop the demonstration at the conference in a short period of time, which he claims was played in real time.

Deep Down is expected to make a proper showing at this year's E3.
