Don’t Starve Origin Story Explains How Wilson Got Lost in the Wilderness

March 1, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Don’t ever do what the disembodied voice tells you to do.

Klei Entertainment has released a video that provides a little background information on one of the characters from PC game Don't Starve, Wilson the gentleman scientist. Wilson is the first playable character in the “uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic” that is currently in beta.

In the video, we see Wilson apparently struggling with making progress on his scientific interests. Defeated, he slouches into an armchair when suddenly his radio starts to speak to him, asking if he'd like to learn some secret knowledge. After a moment in which ethereal scientific formulae swirl around Wilson's head, he seems suddenly prepared for his scientific breakthrough. He builds a machine that requires – among other things – some of his own blood, and when he throws the switch as instructed… well, the results are probably not what he had in mind.

This origin trailer hasn't just been handed over to those interested in the game, however. A teaser video for an update for the game called “Winter” included some morse code, which fans translated and began to discuss on the game's forums. After 58 pages, they had finally solved the puzzle and discovered the URL for the video. It's pretty awesome to see how excited these people were to work together to solve the various clues.

If you want to try to help Wilson survive and maybe even escape from the strange wilderness in which he ends up after the events of this video, you can try the Don't Starve beta by buying the game at 20% off. You even get two copies, so you can send one to a friend.
