Sony Plans to Port PSP Games to NGP

February 1, 2011

Sony is reported to be exploring possibilities for owners of existing PSP titles to exchange their old games for newer NGP version.

The lack of UMD support on Sony's new NGP drew a lot of flak towards the company. As the PSP was largely hamstrung by the problem-prone UMD format, Sony's move towards digital distribution on the current PSPgo and the upcoming NGP gaming device is perfectly understandable.

Unlike the PSPgo, which only supports products purchased through Sony's online PlayStation Store, the new NGP will support a new proprietary memory card format for its products. As an attempt to salvage the large library of games already on the PSP platform, Sony revealed to Japanese electronic website Gigazine that it plans to release old PSP titles on the NGP's new card format, as well as through the PlayStation Store.

With any luck, the old games being brought to the platform will receive high-definition graphics updates instead of being mere ports.

Sony is reported to be exploring possibilities for owners of existing PSP titles to exchange their old games for newer NGP versions, though it has nothing to announce at this time.
