Sony Brings Game Music to Music Unlimited Service

February 15, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

The service costs a minimum of $4.99 a month

Sony has announced that video game music will be coming to its Music Unlimited service, demonstrating that it does at least partially know what fans want. The Game Music Channel is supposedly being brought to the music streaming service in response to “requests for more dedicated genre stations”, which will also apparently lead to more non-game music channels fans have requested like “Old School Hip-Hop” and “New Wave”.

As for the Game Music Channel itself, Sony has a few examples of the kinds of games you can expect to hear from if you give it a listen, including: Assassin's Creed, Silent Hill, Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm guessing there won't be any music from Nintendo or Microsoft games, so don't expect to hear any of that epic music from Halo 3 or the classic soundtracks from the Mario or Zelda series. If you want that kind of thing, you'll have to check other streaming services like Spotify.

Of course, the great thing about Spotify is that if you're happy to put up with adverts you can listen to music for free, whereas Sony's Music Unlimited service involves a monthly subscription. You can check out the kind of music that's available on the channel in 30-second tasters without an account right now, or sign up for a free 60-day trial, but if you want to use the service properly you'll have to pay at least $4.99/£4.99 a month. And that's if you only want to listen on your PC, Mac, or PS3. If you want to listen on your Vita, PSP, iPhone etc., you'll have to pay $9.99/£9.99 a month.
