Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Has No Multiplayer

October 25, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

The team didn’t want to dilute the single-player experience.

Seems like Bethesda’s over-the-top Nazi blasting shooter, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus won’t be following the trend of adding multiplayer to single-player intended titles.

Speaking to PC gamer, a representative of the Machine Game’s spoke out against having multiplayer in games, stating that they wanted Wolfenstein 2 to be focused purely on single-player as not the dilute the story by placing resources on a multiplayer component.

“The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player,” Tordsson Björk said, “Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once.”

According to him, Wolfenstein games have always been more of action-adventure games than the modern shooters that we know of today.

“We feel there’s so much more to them than just shooting,” he said. “It’s a fictional setting, of course, and it’s a crazy story, but we tried to stay honest and tell it as honestly as we can. That’s our goal,” he said. “There are so many things you aren’t seeing. We’re definitely pushing the limits, but at the same time continuing what makes Wolfenstein really special: the drama, the human relationships, with dark humor and violence. It’s pushing them all, on all fronts.”

It’s refreshing to see a triple-A studio sticking to the formula that made the genre popular in the first place. More often than not we’ve seen publishers force multiplayer into games, which, sure makes them extra cash through microtransactions, but generally ruins the main reason you bought the game – the storyline.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus releases this Friday for PC, PS4 and Xbox One
