Major League Gaming May Eventually Have A Game Of Its Own

January 30, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

And it’ll be a lot less like Halo and more along the lines of Quake, believe it or not.

E-sports is growing by leaps and bounds with each passing year. Millions of players across the globe are very much engaged, especially with how Major League Gaming, or MLG, presents the movement.

But, like with anything that's been building momentum, there are certain obstacles that's preventing e-sports from truly exploding. One such thing is accessibility. And in an interview with The Penny Arcade report, MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni revealed one possible solution: a game that MLG would create themselves.

So, what would the perfect MLG game be like? According to DiGiovanni:

"The thing is, I think it would have to be derivative of a few things. I loved Quake, and I’ve played a lot of Counter-Strike and fighting games… The perfect game for me is something that would disrupt a little. I’ve always dreamed of a multi-screen experience where you have players and coaches interacting and having touch surfaces and communication… but that’s so complicated and hard to explain.

So I would start very simple with an arena duel, deathmatch-type shooter that just works and has draw. It’s something we haven’t had for a while… There is something about Quake, one-on-one, that’s special, and we don’t have that anymore."

Basically, something that harkens back to simpler times, like Quake or Unreal Tournament. Unfortunately, the stuff that is played and presented today, like Halo or Call of Duty, makes it difficult to present clean, skill-based competition, as PAR notes.

So, when will such a game happen? It's difficult to say, but DiGiovanni believe that it is "inevitable."

"One day we will. One day we will. Yeah… We’ve had people approach us about it. Right now we want to focus on partners with games like PlanetSide 2 and help them broaden out and take advantage of what we’ve built. But we can also take advantage of their understanding of the game mechanics. We’ve done this with folks at Bungie, with folks at Activision, we’ve done it with lots of studios. We’ve done that enough times to have the understanding to take to our own title, eventually."
