Grand Theft Auto Sci-Fi “Very Tempting” According to Rockstar Boss

January 29, 2013 by Alex Co

Dan Houser, vice president of Rockstar, thinks a sci-fi version of GTA is "very tempting," but don’t expect it anytime soon.

While Rockstar has been very quiet when it comes to actual Grand Theft Auto 5 info, could the franchise eventually move into the sci-fi realm for future installments?

In an interview with French site Ecrans (via OXM), Rockstar vice president Dan Houser admits that the idea is "very tempting," but also states that they need "a good reason" to do it.

Houser on Grand Theft Auto going the science-fiction route:

We will do it the very second we have an idea…One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We're not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we how to write a video game.

When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say…We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything's possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason.

Even if Red Dead Redemption isn't a Grand Theft Auto game, most people see it as Rockstar bringing the GTA formula to a Western setting; and to say it fared rather well might be putting it lightly.

Before you jump for joy at the thought of a GTA game having laser guns, lightsabers and space ships, keep in mind that Houser is just open to the possibility, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's one on the way in the near future. I mean, we don't even know a lot about Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 and that game is scheduled to hit in Spring of this year!

Would you want to see Rockstar make a sci-fi Grand Theft Auto game or should they build a new franchise from the ground up if they're going to attempt it?

For more Grand Theft Auto-related info, we posted something last night that might prove that GTA 5 is indeed heading to PCs.
