The NeoGeo X Is Alive And Well After All

January 25, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

They’re still making the handheld, or the regular version at least.

The other day we reported that the plug was apparently was being pulled on the NeoGeo X, which was certainly troubling, given that that handheld revival of the revered old school/arcade platform was barely a month into its lifespan.

According to Engadget, the report was simply a half-truth. Yes, production has halted, for the NeoGeo X Gold Limited Edition model. Which makes sense, given that it's a limited edition and all.

According to the press release issued by Tommo, which produces the NeoGeo X:

"There has been a recent rumor about the end of the production of the NEOGEO X System. This rumor is incorrect. Tommo will be continuing to support the NEOGEO X format going forward with more games, peripherals and software updates, as well as more units of the console hardware. The NEOGEO X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product. We are currently manufacturing our final run of this Limited Edition Collection Series and our distributors worldwide expect to have the final stock in April. Given the popularity of the NEOGEO X format, we don't expect this stock to last long.

We are absolutely delighted with how the NEOGEO X has performed so far, and are incredibly grateful for the support of gamers and we are looking forward to continuing the development of this game platform."

So there's nothing to see here folks; the NeoGeo X is alive and well. Or is it? We still have zero details as it pertains to these upcoming games, peripherals and software updates. And this cetainly would have been a good opprotunity to say something. Oh well.

Though that last bit should be good news for all current owners. There's has been a steady stream of complaints, regarding the speed mostly, of how games fail to run as well as their original counterparts. A much-needed overhaul of the emulation software would definitely be appreciated.
