Much has been written already about major league baseball superstar Curt Schilling's bid at being a video game mogul. Despite Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the inaugural effort by his studio, 38 Studios, getting a decent amount of accolade, it's pretty much been a disaster across the board.
As a result, Schilling is parting ways with some of his most prized and storied possessions. Including a bloodstained socked, and a very famous one at that. As ESPN explains, it was one of several items that was put up for collateral to guarantee loans for his game company. Now he's selling it in hopes of paying off that aforementioned debt.
The bloodstained sock was the result of an injury he sustained while pitching the second game of the World Series, against the St. Louis Cardinals, in 2004. Schilling was able to lead his team, the Boston Red Sox, to victory. It was their first World Series win in 86 years, hence why the sock means so much, to so many.
Which is why, when it goes up for auction next month, the sock is expected to fetch between $75,000 to $100,000. When addressing the possibility of sellling off a key part of his legacy, in an interview last year, Schilling explained that it was part of "having to pay for your mistakes… I'm obligated to try and make amends and, unfortunately, this is one of the byproducts of that."
