Activision “Flattered” by New Competitor Disney Infinity

January 16, 2013 by Alex Co

Activision has issued a statement regarding Disney’s foray into the "toys to life" category.

Earlier today, Disney unveiled its own take on the "toy to life" genre with Disney Infinity. Regardless of what you think of the company, Disney Infinity is obviously inspired by Activision's hugely-successful Skylanders franchise.

So, now that Activision has seen Disney's hand, the biggest videogame publisher in the world has issued a statement on what they think.  In a statement released to Forbes, John Coyne, vice president of consumer marketing at Activision is "flattered" that Disney is entering what he calls "our toys to life" category.

We are thrilled by the incredible success that the Skylanders franchise has had in such a short period of time…We are also flattered that one of the leading family entertainment companies is joining our toys to life category. We continue to focus on delivering innovative and immersive entertainment experiences to kids around the world and are pouring more creativity into our games.  As a result we are well positioned to continue leading the category.

Obviously, Skylanders has a head start but I wonder if Activision will still be flattered with Disney Infinity once it takes a significant piece of their Skylanders pie?

Seeing as Disney has the might of all their IPs to help them, do you think Disney Infinity has a chance at beating Skylanders at its own game? Or is Activision just too good at marketing and making sure that people keep buying their products?

Thanks, VG247
